Gated community or not???

Some members of my neighborhood are bringing up the subject of having a gated community. I think this is rediculous. My community is very diverse, low-middle income for the most part, and in the almost 20 years I've lived there I've had no problems with criminal activity. There have been some car thefts and a few break ins but that's it.

A gated community is elitist as far as I'm concerned, a status symbol that is not appropriate for my community. We are certainly not a wealthy group of people. But there are a few people who are adament about this. I think they are crazy. We are not in Beverly Hills. What do you think?

Gated community or not???deleted myspace

We are suppose to be a gated community but there are only 13 houses. We are in an mid to upper level, but am with you, I cannot see any reason for locking our gates.

It would be a pain since we live on a one way street. I certainly approach the other neighbors and see if the majority will rule. But, the neighbors probably have no idea of the unlimited expense it can cause. Not counting the initial cost there is always something that needs to be done and the HOA dues are always high, Maybe they want that to keep others from moving in. It sounds like they have not really thought this thing through.

Once they get the area gated, then they will want new bi-laws and conventants and they will be telling you what kind of wreath (if any) can be hung on your door. It really does mushroom and get out of hand. Then there are special assessments for items that were not planned for. Extra insurance and so much more that apparently aware of. Maybe you will want to make a list of some of the potential problems and let each person see what could happen.

You may want to take the plans to the local or city zoning board to see if can be done. In may cases you cannot. Check your bi-laws and covenants too they may prohibit it. But, do not give up, have them sign a petition against it it you can.

If they cannot prove a reason for it, I doubt the city will approve it.

Don't really know what to say. What are their reasons for wanting to gate the property? Are most of the residents older and fearful? You say crime is not the issue. If there is no real purpose behind it, can't see why they would want to do so other than to 'lend' an aura of elitism, like you said.

However, having said that, I have lived in a gated community once before and found it quite nice. I had a townhome within the city and the gated aspect brought a lot of security and comfort to the residents as you could not enter without the 24 hr security personnel verifying your entrance with the homeowner. The entire property was wrought iron fenced mixed with brick - only one way in and one way out. The properties were higher middle income and smack dab in the middle of the city and though treed and flowered and quite pretty, the gating was to protect residents and their children.

I live in the suburbs now and that is not necessary, yet I see gated communities where I live too in some areas...and our crime way is almost nil. Go figure. Gives folk a sense of being 'privileged' and 'special'??? Dunno

The cost alone is prohibitive in doing this AFTER a community is built.
If I were you I would not write off your neighbors concerns. This country is getting farther and farther from a Norman Rockwell Print.
Perhaps some people want to try to live like the "Joneses" eh? It's hard to deal with them, unless you have enough people like you, to fight it. Good luck.
There are things to consider. I personally disagree, my brother bought a home in a gated community. They have some pretty outrageous rules. It's upper middle class a few minutes from Daytona Beach. You cannot wash your car in the driveway or yard. You cannot even leave a hose coiled up in the yard or against the house when you water your yard. That's just two.
has any one set down a figured out how much it is going to cost to make it secure and what are the estimate yearly cost -- also who is going to pay for this nice secure fort -- when folks have to think about coming up with funding you might see folks run behind the wood work!!!!
I live in a gated community. That does not stop people from breaking into your home. Perhaps it makes you more of a target. When you go gated, you will end up taking care of the streets in your comm.. You, the Assoc. will have to arrange for %26amp; pay for repairs . This could be some big bucks. The same for street light repair. Dues are collected every month can run into some LARGE amounts. If those people want gated tell them to move to a gated community.
I have lived in both, they are elitist, I pre fer not to, however homeowners associations can be a real pain also and the dues can get expensive and ya can't please everyone ever. Bicker, bicker, bicker.

We never had a break in or auto theft anywhere in either place however.
Our town tried to do this also %26amp; we voted it down. We are a lower-middle class family community %26amp; also have no major problems with crime. We mow our lawns %26amp; keep our houses looking nice. If you start that, you have to pay maintenence fees %26amp; answer to a housing committee. I don't want someone to tell me what color to paint my house, how many trees I can plant or to get rid of my dogs. I am respectful of my neighbors, and as long as I'm leaving everyone else alone, I'd like them to leave me alone.
We live in a middle class area of town, in a middle class gated mobile home park, and I like it. :) The gate might not keep out people trying to do harm - but it might make them think it does! :)

*Checking back in to see if it has calmed down in here yet! ;-)
Had a friend that lived in a gated community. Rules, regulations and the cost was horrible and the cost for the people living there was always going up each year. Never understood why the neighborhood just didn't get rid of the gate, they had break ins almost every other month and never caught the culprits. As far as I know the gate is still there. What a waste of money.
I am not in favor of gated communities. The rules are usually silly and there is also a tenant who is over zealous in the keeping of the RULES. The upkeep is outrageous. The meetings are horrible and you can't even do what you want with your own property. Have them check into the costs and the raising costs of community gating.
Depending the total in your neighborhood they will have to vote I'm sure.

Tell them instead of doing this just have the police drive threw more often.

lol are is this what they want to stay out. lol
Maybe they are looking to the future.

Things are going to get really bad.

People are losing their jobs, their homes, and the price of everything is going up so fast! Pretty soon it is going to be a dangerous place to live if you have groceries and a roof over your head.

Those who have to 'do without' are going to come after YOURS.
First thing I wonder is whether these adamant people are new to the community, maybe uninformed about its pleasurable conditions, maybe having moved there to escape less pleasurable conditions they still carry in fear.

I would ask the police to provide the last twenty years of reports for your documentation, to take to the community discussion meeting, to prove your point. To show the low crime proof.

But as far as seeing a gated community as Hollywoodish and elite, I disagree. In neighborhoods less pleasurable than yours, or higher income than yours, they provide relaxation that otherwise could not be achieved.
Why not just have a neighborhood watch . If this has not been mentioned yet I would offer the suggestion . You can talk with your local police department and they will offer the help you need to get this started and it would definately be cheaper than a gated community and would leave money to spend on other things . Another bonus to this is it really does get neighbors working together ...good luck !
First lets define this. A gated community, means there is only one way in and out and gated and maybe a security guard at the front entrance. This keeps out unwanted traffic from the community.

Two -or are you talking about an Association and CC%26amp;R's.

This involves annual dues and an Association who sets the rules for the community in whole. They decide what those rules are and tenants must abide by them or face fines.

They can tell you when you can wash your car, what color to paint your house, what kind of plants you can have and the list goes on. No one is going to tell me what I can not do on or in my property. Or what color my house or what type of plants I can have in my landscaping. How many cars I can have parked in front of my house and so on. Who appointed them King of the World!!!!.

Why not just have a Neighborhood Watch? Contact your local police dept. and discuss with them in having a meeting of how to keep your neighborhood safe. This involves neighboors watching out for people who do not belong in the neighborhood, Reporting to the police if unsavory people are around the area, so they can patrol more offen. Does not cost anything. And leads to a safer community.

Good Luck!!!!

Community college/university help please?

Hi I am I High School student doing college research because next year I need to decide whether to apply to a college or not. Right now I think I want to become a Doctor so I'm thinking that I want to start out as a registered nurse work for a couple years as a rn to get some experience and then go to med school. Right now I think I shouldto go to a community college for 2 years get my associates degree and then transfer to a university and get my bachelors degree. any recommendations on any community colleges that are usually pretty easy to transfer credits from into a university (please include city and state). and any universitys that are good about accepting transfer students from community colleges? I live in the U.S. by the way. And if possible please recommend affordable ones.

Community college/university help please?myspace pages

California has best community college. It is actually a little secret of california. So any community college of California is good and you can easily transfer to a 4 year college from a JC in California. But your plan seems perfect. But you might want to consider the amount of time it will take you to complete all of this. Doctors typically take 8 years... so to get a MD it takes about 8years minimum. So if you go to community college you have just added another 2 years and if you work for 2 years to get some experience you have added another 2 years so now you are alread upto 12years. And now let's say you dont want just an MD but you want to specialize in something add another 2-4years so that makes it 14-16years total. So if you are 18 getting out of high school by the time you will be compeletly done with school will be 32 - 34years old. Good Luck.

There is a website at least for california colleges that shows transfer credits it's called assist.org. I used it to take classes at Fullerton College that transferred to Cal Poly Pomona.

I would say either go to a very popular community college that you know a lot of students transfer from, or choose what 4 year you are going to go to so that you can take the right classes towards your GE when you're at the CC.

Although you will save a lot of money at the CC, be careful with the types of habits and views of school you develop. A lot of kids in community colleges don't take classes as seriously. Make sure you finish what you start out to do!
all community colleges are affordable.
all community colleges are affordable. no community colleges stand out above any others, its pretty much you go to whatever community college is in your community.

as far as transferring credits: you should start by looking at a college/university that you would want to transfer to and think you could get into. then look at their policies for transferring credits. most large public institutions are good with transferring credits and counselors at the school are always eager to help.

Community college grades....?

If I went to a community college did a couple of classes, but didn't do so well....and then I changed cities and am going to go to another community college, with really good grades. Do I need to tell them about my old scores in that community college classes? Or is it a whole new fresh start for me? Sthank Syou

You do not have to transfer any credits if you don鈥檛 choose too!!! Four years ago I attended a University and I did poorly, last fall I decided that it was time for me to step it up. Now, I attend a Community College, my grade point average is a 3.8, my current school has no knowledge of my poor academics, and next spring I will be transferring to UMKC. So what they don鈥檛 know won鈥檛 hurt!!!

Community college grades....?premade myspace myspace.com

Keep the bad grades on the DL and just mention the better ones.
Unless asked, I would not bring it to the table. Some people tell me that they do fine hiding this fact, but I always think honesty is the best policy. You never know if it'll come back and haunt you someday.
If you want credit for any of the classes you took at the first college you have to transfer all the classes you took there. The knew college will see those grades but most schools only use the grades you got at their school to calculate your GPA.
Unless you want the credits you earned at the old school to transfer to the new school, and the school you are attending now has no record of them, you do NOT need to mention the old school. I go to UMD and did the same thing. It was fine.
I wouldn't. Only if you want to transfer your credits.

Community awareness question #2: what resources are available in your community for disadvantaged pe

I am sitting here watching a blizzard raging outside, and I wondered how many folks know where people can go if they are homeless or recently fell on hard times? Does your community, in general, reach out to those who are disadvantaged (homeless, low income, recently laid off, recently divorced, etc.)? I moved from a town where every church had a food and clothing bank prepared, to one where neighbors do not even know each other. How do you think your community rates? Do you participate?

Community awareness question #2: what resources are available in your community for disadvantaged persons?big brother myspace

In my community, you can call Contact (a telephone hotline available in many places) to give you info about community resources. I took their training session, which informed me about a lot of options to get help in my area.

There are food banks, shelters, places to help abused women and children, a fund to help pay people's utility bills when they can't afford them, thrift stores that will help clothe needy people, public transit for anybody who needs a ride (including handicapped people)...there are quite a few things. I'm sure there could be more, but my town's not too bad as far as helping people who are down on their luck.

I read an article recently, though, in Newsweek, about how many suburbs don't have enough programs or support for people who are having a hard time. Not enough mass transit, not enough food banks, not enough discount stores and stuff for low-income people...it's a shame.

So I think it's a widespread problem that doesn't get enough attention.

How does a community affect teachers and schools?

Ok so I have to write a paper explaining how a community affects the teachers and schools of that community. How do you classify how large a community is? How would a person find out this effects of a certain community and school they have never been to that school or community and can't find any information about it online?

How does a community affect teachers and schools?myspace live

The schools belong to the community and are usually run by a School Board which sets policy for the district. That Board is composed of elected citizens from the community where the schools are located. They are in charge of setting the budget, for approving the hiring and firing of personnel, and for setting all policies by which the schools are run. Thus they have much power and influence in running the schools which, of course, affects the teachers and students alike. In addition, there are usually parent organizations such as Boosters who support various endeavors of the school such as Band Boosters, Sports Boosters, or more specifically, Football Boosters. Parent Advisory Councils also exist in many schools made up of parents. Thus there are many ways in which a community affects teachers and schools.

Any community College Students that freak and stress out a lot about transferring to a Univerisity?

I'm a community college student with high hopes of getting out of community college as soon as possible. i just graduated from high school this past june and wish to transfer into USC come fall 2007, entering as a college sophmore. Is it really normal to be so pensive about this matter? My gpa is approx. a 3.8 or 4.0 right now in college though I just began school so theres no way to accurately tell right now. I have a midterm in math come this tuesday and i'm stressing that i need to perform well since my last test in that class was a B. I'm a full time student and feel i need to vent perhaps, relax and not stress out as much but at the same time know that i need to do well this first year in community college. So to all the community college students out there or tranfers....should i be freaking out this much?

of course freaking out is ok. transferring from a c.college to a university is stressful. first though, good luck in transferring to usc i know its tough. your gpa is great, but is there anything else your into??? selection processes are different from univerisity to university. but if you have over 1000 people applying to get in with all the same gpa, they look for other criteria to pick who'll they'll let in. so hopefully you've got some work/community service, special awards, leadership positions to make you stand out more. but as for that math test, study hard but dont exhaust yourself to the point where you cant think anymore. im going to transfer soon and i have a gpa of 3.8 and community service and a leadership position in a club on campus. you can say all my extra-cirrcular activites are extra sprinkles on my college application cake.

good luck on your test. study hard, but dont kill yourself of course. you'll do just fine.

Also, what if my wife files bankruptcy, will the bankruptcy show up on my credit? Can the creditors come after me after my wife files bankruptcy?

A community for White people?

Now first of all, I'm not a racist, I'm half White(but consider myself White anyway) so please don't play the race card crap.

Since, Black, Latino and Asian people all have their own little community/city in America. I say it's about time that us White folks get a community of our own too, a community where White people can live together as a group and can celebrate White history and learns about all the great things that White people have done through out history. It's my dream and I'm going to make that dream a reality one day.

Amen. Everything that white people have accomplished has been turned around to be racist.

If the Indians were still in control of North America, they would still be living in tepees. They had their shot, and didn't progress for thousands of years. The PC bullshit would have you believe that all cultures would have progressed equally. Nonsense!

The Europeans created the Industrial revolution. Match that, any savage culture!

Great. wanna cookie?
Should you try that, you might probably be tossed out on your ear for being only half white.
Go to any rich area in the suburbs in the midwest. I guarantee you 99.9% of the population will be white. Sad, but true.
I am white too, so okay.
You need to seek help, seriously, I'm not being mean but you should see a specialist, because it sounds like you have some self-hatred issues deep down.
Already been done. It's called America!! BTW I'm white too so you can't play the race card here either
What are you talking about? No one has their own little 'community.' Your best bet would be moving to the Netherlands. You will find lots and lots of white people there.
I see your point. But, that would go over like a lead baloon.
Oh really...please inform me...what cities do "we" have to ourselves?
ok racist
Will not happen until the white population is a minority then still doubtful
Um... I dont mean to sound stupid... but isn't the majority of our nation, our public educational curiculum %26amp; our elected representatives on a whole, white?

And what kind of white do you mean? Anglo-saxon, celtic, eastern european?

White can be broken down into many different categories of human beings. If you like categorizing people.

The reason minorities get "their own little communities" is because the nation as whole is majority white %26amp; we've overrun everything except for these little onclaves of cultural individuality.

White Supremacy is bad. It has a negative impact on everyone, even white people.

The concept that everything that comes out of Europe is somehow more superior than everything that comes out of asia, africa or south america is a pervasive disease which has scarred the USA for centuries.

It's about time we get over it %26amp; start acknowledging the great accomplishments of all humans, on a whole... we cont need to break us up into these arbitrary categories of skin color %26amp; what country our parents came from.

We're all from Africa anyways.
you are an idiot.
haha thats hilarious! what good have we done through the history? tell me, im ready to learn. your dream is never going to work, plus you aren't even fully white! are you half black or what? anndddd the only white community that i know actually celebrates their history is the KKK. just join the KKK. HAHA. they even have their own website!
Everything you just said there, sounds so wrong.
You wouldn't be a part of it......you know, since you are only half, that excludes you
It called suburban America, trailer parks and prison.

Get a life....embrace the side of yourself that has self respect.
I don't think I'll be joining. People like you should make your own community far FAR away and you can take Ralph Kramden and them with you too. I'll stay right where I am thank you very much.
As soon as I read "I'm not a racist," then went on to read your ideal society of splitting Whites into a seperate group, I almost spilt my drink laughing on how you contradicted yourself in less than 3 lines of text.
you see this is the sh*t that makes me dislike some white people. Why are you complaining about not having one thing you want when you have everything you need.

Besides if you had your own community what would you do?

Rise up, form an army, try to take over any race that gets in your way and destroy every f*cking thing you touch.

White community??? F*CK NO
how can a non white person believe they are white? You are an idiot. Hitler hated you! You think you are in some club that you are not in!

The self hated is abominable you dont even know the racist are laughing at you! I feel sorry for you.
First of all, who cares? But to be honest, I do get tired of anybody who thinks they ought to benefit because of whatever race they happen to have been born. I don't think non-white races should have their own separate whatever it is, like magazines, or contests, or holidays. If a white person tried to publish a magazine that said it was devoted to the white American, how would that go over? Not good. It isn't that I'm a racist, I am one of those Native Americans whose people got ousted and then lied to so that we'd sell our birthright and end up not being able to benefit when the oil came in from our land. How many of us do you see going around with a special day or anything? People are people and there is no point in trying to argue what race is the best because none of them are the best. They are all the same, but just like people who live in different parts of the country are different, people from different parts of the world are different but not in the basic components that make a human being. Colors are what they are in people for a reason and it is not so that they can hate someone of a different color. This country needs to grow up.

My community is being overrun with crime. What can I do to improve it without encountering politics?

This is a weird question. My community has, in the past few years, been facing a massive increase in crime. I would love to make a difference and help curb it but I don't know what to do. I am young and not very sure what I want to do for a living. I have lightly considered becoming a police officer but I have read endless stories and articles about how the politicians of the community are hindering the police department's ability to fight the crime. Due to politics, the police force of the area is taking a big hit at a time when the community needs police protection to be at the forefront of the politicians' minds. The police officers are great in the area and I hold the utmost admiration for all of them (my family has several ties to the department). It just seems that the people in charge are tying too many hands.

Are there any ways short of dressing up in a costume and becoming a vigilante (not literally, of course) to really help my community?

This is too large a problem for one person to grapple.

There must be others who are concerned about this.

Groups and clubs can accomplish much more than a single person.

Are there any locally you can join?

Getting involved with your community is always a great start, putting forward your views and listening to others.

You will probably be amazed how many like-minded people there are. You are not alone.

Good luck.

If there are lots of others who feel the way you do, you can organize protest marches and give the local politicians hell. Tell them to 'get out'!!

Make videos portraying the problem and show them on local Community Access TV if you have it. They can be short 30 second PSA types or half hour or full hour programs. It doesn't take slick video production, just an honest look at the situation. Be sure to attach the politicians' names as targets of blame.

These are a couple of ways to influence politicians without lots of money.

Some of your protest signs could read, 'Curb Crime or We Will' with a picture of a handgun on them.
You are not alone.

I guess most communities all over the world are subject to having become accustomed to isolated and organised crimes. This is probably similar to our bodies, the longer we live unchecked, the greater chance of cancer !

. . . back to your quest !

I suggest start with yourself, find out who you really are, your positive and negative features, and potentials, and most important your short term and long term targets.

Once you get organised, your learning becomes intuitive and you can find the best way out. If you become a knowledgeable person, caring, and honest, then automatically you influence others around you. You might never need to form a vigil anti gang - others around you will behave like one !
How about helping the community by preventing the next generation from going into a life of crime? Become a teacher.

DO NOT become a po po! If you are going in to make a difference and fight crime, you'll just be disappointed b/c of the politics. They have the mentality of sticking together regardless of if an innocent citizen has been killed or injured. All those I know that are former cops say they couldn't take it and...these are good people and I could see how they quit the force.
you cannot but politic or run your own gang secretly
Its a slow process but start by becomming involved in the policing organization. Community Policing ar the Police Committee and learn about the organization. Police are controlled by political masters and that's good because otherwise we have a police state.
The best advice I can think of is be involved in the community. Identify the problems and work toward solving them. Start community actions groups for the identified problems. Put the city on notice that these are problems. Get the media and other groups involved in your cause. Create a partnership with the police department. Start a neighborhood watch program. If you think it, you can do it.
join your local block watch group
Your question is the concern of many citizens whose communities are frustrated with crimes.

Since it is the legislature who makes the crimes enforced by police officers (police "react" to crimes; there is no "prevention" on a legislative scale), your best course of action is to start writing to your congressmen and emphasize the need for legislative action to re-write the laws that allow law enforcement officials...specifically, police officers, to take preventive measures in stopping a criminal act before it has occurred.

Now, before you say, "That's ridiculous...police officers are not clairvoyants," let me state that I am referring to potential crimes that have a greater propensity of "probable cause" or "good faith belief." Example: an area in a neighborhood well-known for drug activity, gang-related crimes, etc. Another: victim calls for help because an abuser has been released from jail, has called the victim and made threats to find and harm him/her. Perhaps being given the authority by law to patrol or even surveille this perp may prevent this victim from harm or even death.

Case in point: A violent man is sent to prison for nearly killing his ex-girlfriend during a domestic disturbance. He is released and the victim has appeared before the parole board to protest the defendant's parole. Parole board decides to release the prisoner. In less than a week, the victim answers a knock at her door. Her ex is standing there with his firearm pointed at her and shoots. She is DOA. This happened in FL a few years ago. And this sort of thing is not exclusive to FL, and granted is not the norm, but it does occur.

Had this victim's reports regarding the former prisoner's threats on her life been acted upon by her local police department and Sheriff's Office (via surveillance/investigation), this woman might be alive today.

However, our LEOs are kept busy reacting to crimes, not preventing them, with the exception of crime-prevention programs that are in place by law enforcement agencies themselves and rely on donations to be in place.

You are correct that the people in charge are tying too many hands, but until proactive citizens start writing to their legislators, those hands are still bound by the legislative laws that govern their duties.
send out a press release saying that 4 'would be burglers" or suspected purse snatchers were all killed by your neigborhood

Get a crime watch going in the community.
Without encountering politics: YOU CAN'T!

Community college students: Have you ever been considered over qualified for financial aid?

I've been going to a community college on and off for the past 3 or 4 years (finally graduating!!!!!) and I noticed my first full time semester here I was offered not a cent of financial aid and I broke the bank paying for everything and my first full time year at the community college I was only offered a tiny sum of a pell grant and had to get the extra money from another source based on my financial need to (no .loans from this school thank god, lol) but still we(my family) seemed to have been overqualified at my local community college. But I got scholarships, grants, and loans (I still owe) from my year at a 4-year-college so I know I'm not "overqualified" for financial aid all together. LOL

Community college students: Have you ever been considered over qualified for financial aid?graphics for myspace

I think perhaps, if you got a Pell Grant, you weren't *overqualified* as much as your school's costs were quite low. Financial aid, and especially grant money, is usually offered based on a percentage of financial need (cost of attendance as determined by the college minus Expected Family Contribution--EFC--equals need). Because most grant funds available to the college is a set allocation of funds (they get a certain amount of money to award as grants) the financial aid office sets up a formula to award it as fairly as possible. The more able you are to contribute to your own education (a higher EFC) the more likely you are to get a smaller percentage of grant money. Pell eligible students are generally quite needy and get a larger percentage of grants because they are less able to help themselves. Middle EFC students (those over the Pell limits to about 6,000 to 7,000) may qualify for non-federal (state) grants or institutional funds at a community college and probably some work or loan funds. Higher EFC students generally qualify only for loans.

Yes, I know, no one wants to have loans, and all grants is a great thing, but it is a careful balance on the other side of the desk to give as many students as possible who have no resources enough money to go to school and give some to those better able to help themselves some as well. You have no idea how badly those of us who sit on my side of the equation feel when we run out of what we call discretionary grant money knowing how many more students will need that help and knowing that the piggy bank is empty. We do feel the pain of students who shouldn't have to borrow, but must because there are so many students with so much eligibility for aid and not enough grant dollars for them all.

Let me offer my congratulations on completing your degree. It does please me to know you have stayed the course and finished your program. Good luck and best wishes. I'll be thinking about you at commencement time.

Community college students: Have you ever been considered over qualified for financial aid?myspace tweaks myspace.com

Because its a community college thats why you are overqualified. Check if your school has AMS program. Its through Sallie Mae and basically what you do is pay 1/4th of the bill upfront with the $35.00 fee that they charge. Every month of school, you have to pay 1/4 th of what ever is left, usually for 3 months. At least like that you are not borrowing and don't have to pay for it all at once.

I posted a question in parapsychology and it was deleted by yahoo staff with an un-named violation.I IMMEDIATLY filed a COMPLAINT. I then posted the famous question "why was this question deleted? along with the question, in yahoo answers. The "COMMUNITY" reported the question and it was deleted. I IMMEDIATLY filed an APPEAL. This along with an apology and notice that reporting parties would now have less influence in the community. What about the ORIGINAL question? If you were deducted 10 points for your removed question, then it was Customer Care who pulled your question. However, it was actually the Community Moderation who reported you, but it was a Human (Staff) who pulled your question erroneously.

If you did not lose any points for your question being removed, then this means your question was removed by the Community Moderation, hence your question received numerous reporting from the Community, or a very trusted User reported you.

Community awareness question #3: what social activities are there for children in your community?

Does your community have a child-friendly atmosphere? Why do you feel it does or does not? Are children in your community encouraged, in general, to participate in activities that encourage teamwork, leadership, and/or critical thinking? Do they have cool places to go to hang out and be kids? Do you think these things are important?

i truly hope this essay is something that is coming from your heart, not just because of how you will be profiting from it. to write your essay, there can be millions of ideas, but the only way it will really make a difference is if you mean it. if you mean well, you will certainly receive the recognition or happiness you deserve. it looks like you've got as many ideas as you can, but now try and work on something actively, so that when you write this essay, you have something to back it up, you can speak from personal experience. let your inner emotions come out to show the world how much you mean. show the world that with the generation of tomorrow being in your hands, you will make use of it, and preserve it for your descendants.

please, i beg you, please do not think of this topic as something boring you must get done to make your resume look good. do this to prove to yourself and to others that you can take the responsibility and care that this mother earth of ours is so desperate for.

Community College Stigma?

I've heard that community college is a great way to build up courses so that you better you chances of actually getting into a four year college. Is there really a stigma about community colleges? Do four year colleges dislike community colleges?

Community College Stigma?myspace quotes

It is a great way to get in. The acceptance rate is much higher. Some CCs have guaranteed enrollment for the 4 year schools (in California we have this).

The "stigma" is just the reality that there are some differences and that anyone can go to a community college. Its not the best path for everyone, but is a great path for many (myself included). Don't let the fear of the stigma hold you back.

Also, community college transfer students have higher GPAs than the 4 year students. So they are doing something right.

Community College Stigma?layouts for music myspace myspace.com

its the old story.

More students knew it before and that was when the students flow came in and took other hs students...its not just okay u save money but u can go to your desired college, huh?

well, many colleges have their own plans now and some decided to cut students from community colleges since they need to maintain a good level of graduates from the high school, rather than just took the two years then apply again. Although sufficiently, there are still a large amount of students who do this, and its really depending on your purposes in community college. Lets just put aside the reason that u are poor, if u decide to go to community college, then do it if u want to save money. However, my guesses are not if your desired schools are really though to get into, i would not rather suggest you going to community colleges, since if u have the money and entering by freshman is better. If you enter the school in junior, then you need to figure this out, and figure that out, it takes time for you as a transfer student to hold that same position as when you are in community colleges. The idea is a new environment takes time to adjust it and if u want to maintain 3.5 or 3.7 GPA, it will be tough.

Besides, there are definitely more competitions in Universities and colleges rather than the community colleges.

You may not undergo the pressure if u enter by junior level. You need to make so many friends, and meet so many new people.

On the opposite, if u have the same chance entering your desired college, go for it. You will adjust yourself and you will be good to go 2 years ahead.

If u can apply for ur desired college, go for it, Community college, you can decide on the last minute if u didnt get accepted to ur desired ones.

*crocodil... is right. Besides, if u are in CA community colleges, and u apply for CA colleges, u have more chances to transfer your classes in CA than in WA or OR. It is the same idea for each state.
I d say go to a community college and take your General Requirements only and then transfer them to a 4 year college. You ll be able to transfer most of these credits. It would also be a good idea to first find out from the 4 year college you want to go to if they ll accept your credits taken at the community college, just to make sure you don t waste your time and money. Choosing to do so, saves a lot of money. I personally went straight to a 4 year college so I can t tell you how it feels to attend a community college...
It depends on who you ask. Very rarely will a student go from a community college to an ivy league school so there can be a sort or snobbery involved. Many of students who attend a community my sister and my brother have all gone on to a four year university. They have both stated that they enjoyed the small class sizes and it was easy to get there pre-reques out of the way. My sister is on her way to getting her masters in psychology and says that she benefited from her community college experience. You make what every you want of your education, regardless of where you start.
The stigma of a cc is that there are a bunch of aimless losers who are actually not going to go on to a four-year-college. They are probably students who are going there just to hang out. I've had others say that it is 13th-15th grade. This is simply not true!

There are "university days" in which reps from a particular university comes to try to recruit students to their university. Also there are counselors who can help you plan your college transfer which is in alignment with your desired university.

It may be a bit more difficult to stay focused at a cc because I've met plenty of people who attend a cc because there parents said that they HAD TO GO TO COLLEGE. These people really don't want to be there and they can affect one's morale. Yes, there are those at four-year-colleges too.

I would would give it a chance if I were you. It's up to you to hook up with a good counselor to set you on the right path. It's also up to you to stay motivated and take care of your business too. Best wishes!

Please be nice. I have lived a hard life and was not afforded the chance to go to high-school. Spent most of that time on the streets or in juvenile hall. Anyways, enough with the sad story. I have a question. I want to go to college but am not able to attend a University or State College. The Admission director said that I would need to go through a community college and from there, transfer. My question is, where can I go, community college, that will give me the best education that a community college can offer? I am not a stupid person and know that life is hard without an education, been there, done that. So please share your thoughts on the best place to attend community college.

people often have a wrong misconception of community college. For the first years, you can pretty much get the same education you get a state school for a lower price! so there's nothing wrong with that. It all depends on what state youre in, but im sure you'll find a great one. In the state of FL i know if you go to community college for 2 years you're automatically able to attend a state school and all your classes are transfered. They even have community colleges that are oriented in a certain field but allow you to follow a liberal arts curriculum. It all depends on where you live. Wherever you end up, give it your all and im sure that its all that matters. If you really are thinking of a specific university to go to after community college, you can talk to a counselor and ask which community college they suggest in your area. I wish you only but the best of luck!

Schools vary from state to state. California takes anyone over 18 in Junior College. New York doesn't. You must have a High School Diploma or GED to go to Junior College in New York state.
It depends on where you are located. If you, by some miracle, happen to be in SW Ohio there are a couple of wonderful schools close by with Cincinnati and Dayton so close together. Sinclair Community College is a wonderful place, located in Dayton, OH.

1. Since 1977.

2. (1). In Hawaii, Graffiti is costing the city and state millions of dollars. If we could solve the graffiti problem, we could afford to pay our teachers and police a decent wage.

Some graffitists have real potential to be great artists, but our schools and our great leaders haven't been able to promote their talents.

What public restrooms on the beach have no graffiti on the outside walls? The Sandy Beach restroom. It has a mural of Duke Kahanamoku.

With this concept, we should have more murals of our local heroes. One for Chad Rowan (Akebono) 鈥?visiting Japanese tourists would put Waimanalo on the map. If we had one for Eddie Aikau, no one would dare graffiti over it. If we had one for Brother Iz, Buffalo, or Sale Atisanoe, the results would be positive.

Our public schools could turn their stairwells into murals of an underground sea cave, a rainforest or volcano of long ago.

If hotels would dedicate elevators to be painted with murals, it would send a positive message to future artists that they can be paid for doing a mural rather than punished for tagging.

The bottom line is my community is slow to change. I told our school board over ten years ago that trained dogs are the only way to stop the contraband from getting into our schools. Only now it's being considered.

3. (1). Our transportation is very sad. Most people don't know Hawaii has a six lane highway and its still not enough. Our pedestrian accidents have gone way up thanks to our traffic engineers one way of thinking. They can't even get a Super Ferry sailing between the islands and it is going to cost us taxpayers more than 40 million dollars.

4. (5) The schools in this area are tops because of the great community support. The Pearl City High School Marching Band was the top band in the nation several years ago. They were the first and only band since to have the honor of leading the 107th Tournament of Roses Parade in January 1, 1996 in Pasadena, California.

2) 3 - crime is increasing due to lack of funding and muddled combination of city and county police force (Indianapolis).

3) 2 - compared to my former city (Chicago, lived there for 15 years) there really isn't a viable public transportation option unless you live in a very limited area of the city.

4) 3 - combination of the vacuous "No Child Left Behind" which rates on how well people score on tests vs. actual learning, reduction in funding, and reduction in actual number of students has local school system completely befuddled.

I love Angel Fish, they can get big and add a lot of charater. Kissing gouramis are neat to watch as they actually kiss. They are semi agressive but I've only had them kill each other. There are a few different gouramis that are worth a look for color.

Get a Corey Cat and a Plecostamus for your bottom dwellers and maybe a red tail shark on the bottom.

An upside down cat or a black knife are very cool but they tend to hide.

These are a few of my favorite non-aggressive fishies.

Mollies are great, and yes, I know, tetras..... but they are great community fish. If you want cold water unfortunately your algae eaters are out, you need warmth for them as well as tetras and mollies. You should buy a small water heater and then the world is your oyster.

Tetras are not always small, FYI.. .there are glass skirt tetras, buenos aires tetras (my faves) red phantom tetras....they come in brilliant colors. Unfortunately with a tank so small you can't go with too many fish. I hope you find a good blend!
I don't have too much experience with smaller setups, my smallest tank is 75 gallons. But my one bit of advise for you is don't get a pleco (plecostomus), even though you get them small, they will grow very large given the correct amount of room and get up to 24 inches. Sorry I couldn't be more help, just had to give you a warning.

Edit: Charles Adrian C suggested comet goldfish and a Frontosa, don't listen to that, neither one will work alone in a 25 gallon, even a bigger disaster together. Reasons being, comets get big, I'm talking pond big (24 inches), they are a cold water fish though. The frontosa gets to large for a 25 gallon tank also (12 inches full grown), and is a warm water fish. Be careful on the answers you get and make sure before you make a decision to do research on your own of the fish you choose. I'll give you a good link to research the fish you think you want, it is a very good site and should give you all the info you need. My suggestion for you tank to start is danio, tetra, Otocinclus catfish, cory catfish, guppies, swordtails, white clouds. I know you don't want these peticular fish but with your tank sze you are very limited. I don't keep these fish, I keep mainly cichlids, but like I said, you should do your own research and not take peoples word as bible.

Good fish link

http://www.aqualandpetsplus.com/index.ht...
algae eater, plecos, mollys, guppys, swordtails, neon tetras, platys, and almost anything that can stand a ___ gallon
You can have any kind of goldfish because it is a coldwater fish. You can also have a Mono but I doubt you have that kind of fish at your fish store. You also can have some Angelfish if you like.

Alternative Fish Selections:

Dwarf Gouramis( My fish tank has the temperature extremes, sometimes 20 degrees celsius, sometimes 30 above degrees celsius. I have 3 of these.)

Some comet goldfish( These go good in very heavily dirty water.)

And a Frontosa would do.
check out http://www.liveaquaria.com for a better selection of fish that require a minimum 20-gallon tank. You can keep up to 15 fish in a 20-gallon tank alone.

Community service and scholarships?

I was thinking about applying for a scholarship for community service because I have quite a bit of it but I was wondering could I also include in that list of community service court appointed community service. and if I did include it would they have to know that it was court appointed.

Community service and scholarships?myspace top

It all depends upon the type of scholarship you are applying for. If the court-appointed community service was what motivated you to continue doing the same activity, then definitely, you should put that in the application.

Examples: If you started working with Parks and Recreation for a short-term commitment for Comm Service, and continued on with the same project afterward, and the scholarship applies to these types of service hours, you should definitely include it.

However, if you started a completely separate project, like tutoring kids at the library, but did a park cleanup (an "indirect"/environment service) as a court-ordered event, and the scholarship has specific "direct service" requirements in a specific field, it is probably best to include just the tutoring project or "direct" service and other applicable hours, if that is what is being requested.

If the application is asking for all service hours, you should definitely include all service, and an explanation of the service hours. Typically, most scholarship applications require an essay or composition. You should talk about the experience, including the court-ordered service.

I work as a volunteer leader for many projects, and I find it very gratifying that many people continue with various service projects, even after their court-ordered service is completed.

Here's a link to help you continue your research on some of the community service scholarships:

http://www.finaid.org/otheraid/service.p...

Good luck with your applications.

I think it would be a little bit dishonest to not list on your application that it was court appointed. Community college or 2 year acting with NYFA?

I'm 18. Fresh out of high school. I live in the OC. Near Fullerton. I need training and I have very little experienced. Which is a better option for me to do? A 2 year acting focused schooling with NYFA or go to my nearest community college and have to take GE classes and take theater classes there?

What is the best way to start getting experience at 18 years old with very little background in acting?

Community theater was one thing recommended to me and while I can find community theaters, I'm not sure how to get into these productions they put on. Auditions, etc. Also, I'm worried I might be under-par compared to what they want.

Any help is appreciated.

Honestly, I was a theatre major and I don't recommend it. Some people may argue me on this, but I had worked professionally before I went to a university for theatre and I really thought they were full of it with their training. Lots of other actor friends who majored in drama at other schools agree. Instead of taking classes at a college, I think you should rather take them at specific acting schools in your area. They will have a wider variety to offer and won't be so stuffy in the courses that they offer. I did community theatre way before I graduated high school. I definately recommend that - doing actual roles is the best training you can get! Audition whenever you can. Unfortunately, I learned very little from the drama program. Most people I know wished they had a back-up so they learned something that could give them merit later on during job searches. Even television, theatre, radio background production courses are a good bet because they let you see the what happens behind-the-scenes. Do acting on the outside so you will still love it after your college days. Best to you.

Essay question is...

social constructions have asserted that gender and race are entirely social constructs- discuss with refrences to community development.

any help would be amuch appreciated!

Community developmet essay help?myspace pics

I'm not sure what level of study you're at so forgive me if some of the following is simplistic.

A community is a group of people - could be a classroom; a neighbourhood; a town - any cluster of people who share some common characteristic constitute a community.

Social construction refers to the meaning that we attribute to things - especially to differences between members of a community. For example, have you ever noticed that little children of all races will play together without worrying about racial difference; they don't have a linguistic concept of the difference. However, as they acquire language and copy the meanings they see attributed to others; their attitude towards different others takes form.

So, differences may be by race; colour; style; interest; class; wealth; sex and other basic (inherent) and acquired attributes. The way we regard people who are different in some way depends on how we have learned to behave - that is; the knowledge that we've absorbed especially during developmental years.

The acquisition of knowledge (formal and informal - everything that we know about how to behave and function in society) is 'culture'.

One of the most fundamental differences that has been the basis of revolutions has been class - the poor versus those who hold the power over them. Those with power usually command the means of production - the economy.

Ideas vary about when it was decided that interventions to alleviate some problems at the community instead of the individual level could be effective. We can actually look back as far into history as we like to find examples of people pulling together to change their circumstances. In the modern, industrial era - community development was a way that people grouped together to take control over shared problems - poverty; sickness; work safety; housing; violence and so on.

The key (especially in the era of Human Rights which came together after WW2 ) is empowerment - meaning that people could share, find or create resources to manage their own communities without being so dependent on those in power.

It's a great thing - for example, residents in an inner city slum might cluster together to build a market garden or a safe play area for children. You can find lots of examples via Google.

The good side of community development is that rather than blame being placed on individuals; so that they were isolated in trying to improve their state of being; communities became strong and connected by solving problems as a group. There's a lot of dignity in that.

The downside is that community development can be a way of letting those who hold all the goodies ignore the problem - it can help absolve them of shouldering some of the load and responsibility for social problems. The idea of Human Rights is that all individuals in society should have a chance at fair access to society's resources. Landlords renting substandard but overpriced properties can ignore their responsibilities if everyone bands together to fix the buildings and grounds.

However, good community development includes not only immediate, hands on work on the problem, but also advocacy, protest and political activism and other strategies.

Gender and race are just two of many social constructs - the culture (the body of knowledge) that's transmitted between generations and from media and education etc - tell us how to define certain members of our society. The things we tend to accept as taken for granted truths are really quite malleable. Gender usually refers to the functions (roles - tasks and behaviours) of one sex or another.

Anyway, there are a couple of links below to start you off. One is about a classroom - it's like a microcosm of society that's analyzed there and maybe you could use a similar framework. Basically, work out who holds the power - all else seems to follow from that because whoever holds the power commands the culture that dictates how people think about different others.

No the community college you go to does not effect it. What matters the most is that you do well in college. All community colleges are different in programs, but, they are all still community colleges. Talk with the counselor and work with him/her at the CC to see what you can do. If you have questions go to this site below

Community college or 4 year university for ME?

I'm going to be a Senior this September. I had a 3.6 - 3.8 GPA, %26amp; even straight A's sophomore yr. Junior yr I only had a 3.4 GPA because I had tough classes. My SAT's were average. I only took them once though, and retaking in October.

Answering all or even ONE question will help me A LOT.

Counselors at my school are no help and I don't have an older sibling to help me.

1) How will going to a community college help me decide my major? (It's been years and I still have no clue what I want to major in.)

2) Will I still be able to improve my SATs when I'm in a community college?

3) My dream college is Pepperdine University, but only 28% got accepted. How can I improve my chances of getting in?

4) Is going to a community college the same as a Cal State?

5) How long should I stay in a junior college until I transfer? When I transfer to a 4-year, will I have to stay for another four years?? Credits to be transfered?

Your grades are great, and with glowing letters of recommendations, any accomplishments that you have had or activities that you are in, and a wonderful personal statement (there are quite a few books that give great tips for this or you can Google it and get the same results) you have an excellent change of getting into a great university. Your SAT scores are only one piece of the whole picture 鈥?you 鈥?so do not get hung up on it. Sure, you can study/buy a book to assist you to raise your SAT scores, but with an average score, I would not be too concerned. Do not be afraid to apply, because you never know.

Question 1: At community college - but it is the same at a university, too - you take all your core courses. This is good, because you will discover, at the very least, what you DO NOT want to major in (this is just as valuable), but you might start getting hints or an idea of what you do want to study. It has been my experience that community college counselors are far more helpful than high school counselors are, and they have much training and experience in assisting students in finding their ways. Regardless of the type of school you go to, please make sure to see your counselor/advisor once a semester to make sure you are on track and to make a plan of the courses you should take the next semester (go see one before you begin at your school, too, if it is not required).

Question 2: If you do not get into the university of your choice, and decide to go to a community college, then you NEVER have to worry about the SAT again! Yes! You could take it again, but most universities do not require it out of the transfer students (this is what you will be if you attend a community college first, and then transfer to a university).

Question 3: When I was young, I dreamed of a psychology degree from Pepperdine (*Sigh*), but things changed, and I changed. If you do not get in this application season, keep trying until you do. Make the best grades you possibly can at whatever college you go to, get involved and become a leader in activities/sports/arts, and this will increase your chances. You have to keep in mind that every university only has X amount of spots for each department, and you can never tell who you will be competing against or how many spots there are available.

Question 4: No. A community college is a school that offers freshmen and sophomore level classes only, and the highest degree you can earn is a 2-year degree (a.k.a. associate鈥檚 degree). A Cal State school (I lived in CA most of my life) is a 4-year university that offers freshmen through graduate level classes, and this is where you can earn a bachelor鈥檚, master鈥檚, or post-doctorate degree (Ph.D).

Question 5: If you chose to attend a community college, go to the one that is closest to the university you would like to go to, if you can. This will increase your chances that all your community college classes transfer. Every university has different rules for individual classes, and there is no way for you or I to be able to tell what will transfer for you. You will not have to stay at the university for another 4 years, but every university has different requirements for how many classes you need to take from the university to earn your bachelor's degree. For example, I transferred to my current university, and it required me to take 64 credits at from it before I could graduate. Talk to your community college counselor about when to transfer, but I would recommend transferring when you are (1) ready (only you will know this), and (2) as soon as possible. The university life is different from community college 鈥揼ood and bad 鈥?but the sooner you are at your university the less likely you will ever spend money/time/effort on a class that did not transfer.

I hope this helps, and e-mail me if you have more questions. I am the oldest of seven, four of us are in college now, and I graduate in December and then I am off to graduate school! I have been there. All the best and I hope you get into Pepperdine!

Community/Junior colleges will not transfer well. Get into the best 4 year school you can if you end up trying to transfer to Pepperdine University or the such.

Otherwise, try to see if you can compete in a nation academic competition this year and place high. And try to improve you test scores if you want to get into Pepperdine.
1-You can get all you General Education classes out of the way. So that could be a bonus. You could take classes in majors that interest you.

2-Once you are in college SATs ACTs, and High School GPA mean nothing. The only thing that will matter when transfering will be your College Transcript. Along w/ some letters of recomendations.

3-Im not familar w/ Pepperdines requirements. But you do you have a good GPA. So try taking the ACT as well. Then even if your SATs dont improve that much, you might have a good ACT score.

4-Community colleges are a lot different than State Schools. State schools are mich larger and some have high requirements. Community Colleges are usually easy to get into. Half of the students are going there just to get a degree in something. The other Half is going there to save money and then transfer to a Univ.

5-This one is up to you. If after one year, you know what you want to do then transfer. If your happy saving money and getting Gen Ed classes out of the way then stay another year. And yes Credits will transfer. Usually a little over two years can be.

Personally though get into a good Univ as soon as possible. Basically ditto the person above me.
I began my career in a community college. I went for one year and then transfered with a 3.8 GPA. However, I did that because at the time my SATs were average and my HS record was not very strong. It sounds like your HS record is pretty good so you should only use community college as a Plan B. Also, it can difficult transferring credits from a community college to a senior college so if you can avoid the transfer you're better off. I was still able to graduate in four years but I know people who weren't as fortunate. As for your major, if you could do anything and money were not an issue what would it be? What do you enjoy doing? You don't really need to settle on a major until the end of sophomore year because the first year or so are mostly required General Ed courses. Good luck!
A few users said that it is hard to transfer. It isn't if you play your cards right!

I have taken two full years at a community college and the four year school I am going to is taking every single one of my classes! However, low-level classes like basic math classes won't transfer very well. The easiest thing to do would be contact an admission advisor at pepperdine to see what classes will/won't transfer.

1. At a community college you could start taking generals (which are the easiest to transfer) and find out what you like and don't like. You can pinpoint things you for sure don't want to do this way.

2. Once you go to college and start developing a good college persona. (GPA, extra-curriculars, and community service)

3. All of the above, GPA, extra-curriculars, and community service, can help you get into pepperdine. I am not sure what their percentage acceptance rate of transfer students is though.

4. Not sure about that one

5. I stayed two years. However you can stay as long as you would like. Again I am not exactly sure about Pepperdines rules on this. Pepperdine will most likely expect you to take at least 64 credits (half your four year degree) at their school. You shouldn't have to stay there for another four years.

But! You must be careful in what classes you are taking. Talk to advisors so you aren't wasting your time.

Another major plus to going to a junior college first:

It is SO much cheaper!

You will save so much money by going to a junior college for even one year.

Sorry this is so long and Good luck with this decision.
I am at a community college right now. I am very happy with my choice! Going to a community college opened many doors for me. I can apply to USC, UCLA and, yes, Pepperdine, too. While you are in community college(CC) you will take many GE classes- you'll find you're niche there. When you go to a community college and you get 60 units, you're SATs do not matter any more, nor does you're HS work. Colleges will look at your college grades, GPA, etc. CC'c have programs, such as Honors Transfer Programs/ Scholars Programs, and those look REALLY good, because they are intense courses- harder than average college courses. With that, campus involvement and volunteering(Pepp likes volunteering A LOT!) you should get in. Try to get As nad Bs only (more As). A CC is a 2 year, cheaper, and you can only get an A.A. degree( 2 year degree). A cal state is a 4 year university, cost a little more, and you can get you're bachelors(4 year degree) from there. Also, many CC students transfer to cal states. I will be graduating this December from a CC and tranferring from a cal state. Here is what I am going to do/ how it works:

1) I have my 60 units (MUST HAVE); 2) I will apply for graduation and CSU GE certification; 3) College is 4 years, I already did 2, so I will finish my last 2 years at the cal state I am transferring to; 4) I will speak to a counselor to make sure I am able to transfer and have everything completed so that my credits will transfer (they do); 5) Off I go! :) Going to a CC is great. In case you change your mind about Pepp, you will have many other options. It's way better so you get the feel of college, instead of being thwrown into a lecture hall with over 100 people!
) How will going to a community college help me decide my major? (It's been years and I still have no clue what I want to major in.)

community college will give you the time to see what you like best..take different general classes and then you will see what you like!

2) Will I still be able to improve my SATs when I'm in a community college?

when you're at the cc, you don't need to retake SATs..SATs is only when you decide to go to a 4 year from a high school. so your grades from a cc is good enough for 4 year entrance...

3) My dream college is Pepperdine University, but only 28% got accepted. How can I improve my chances of getting in?

yes, get good grades again in your senior year! but also look into other universities in the area...loyola marymount, the uc programs, the private school in pomona (i forgot name) etc.

4) Is going to a community college the same as a Cal State?

no..cal state schools are 4 year universities....don't look down at cal states...all you have to do is get good grades while at any 4 year university to get into a good masters programs. when you look at the student makeup of a masters/graduate program, there are a lot of people from everywhere, and when i was attending my masters program, there were a lot of people from cal state schools compared to uc schools..so to me,its all the same..

5) How long should I stay in a junior college until I transfer? When I transfer to a 4-year, will I have to stay for another four years?? Credits to be transfered?

usually its 2 years at the jr college and 2 years at the four years..2 years you take the general courses (math, science, humanities, writing) and at the 4 year university, you take the courses that are part of your major...if you went to a 4 year straight from hs, that is basically what you would be doing too...some people stay longer (5 years) b/c they double major...etc...good luck!
I would propose that you take a year off, perhaps even two.

Definitely retake the SAT; try the ACT as well. And, yes, one of the other responders is correct, once you have been accepted into a college your SAT and ACT scores will no longer be important.

You might also ask your high school guidance counselor to provide you with an aptitude test. It could be helpful in helping you decide a major somewhere down the line.

If you just "can't" take a year or two away from the educational scene, go to the community college nearest to your home and get the basic educational requirements out of the way. Picking a major can be done later....

Good luck!
2) Well, of course, you can retake the tests while you are in community college if you like, but community college itself won't help you. You might learn some things you missed out on in high school in your introductory English class, but that's all that will help you with the SATs. You really have to study for SAT tests using books that specifically cover SAT material or take an SAT course. You should be doing some of this during the summer this year if you are considering doing a four year college. Then you can retake the SATs this fall. Granted, if you get your Associate's degree, some 4-year schools won't even require you to give the SAT scores when you are applying for transfer status. Others will require them.

1) Going to community college won't help you decide your major any more than going to a four year college would. Either way, you start out taking classes that would fill general education requirements and classes that interest you. You decide what you want to major in based off of what you like.

4) No. Cal States are 4-year colleges.

5) Stay as long as you want (but no longer than four semesters, or when you get your associate's degree). And no, you don't have to stay an additional four years. You will have to earn 60 credits (in semester hours; I'm not sure what that is in quarter hours) at the 4-year college from which you want to graduate. That's two years if you take a full load. But regardless of all of this, if you go to a communtiy college, you will have to plan your courses there well so that you will be able to transfer all of them, and not just for "general elective credit." This involves getting into contact with universities (to which you intend to apply in the future) and discussing which courses will transfer for what credits.

I'd suggest you try to go to a four-year if you could. Your GPA looks high enough, and you can get into some four-year college with mid-range SAT scores (that's about 1530 on the new test). Also, you won't have to get into sticky transfer credit issues later on.
1) Yes, most freshman do not even have a clue as to what they will major in. Community colleges usually have advisers who can help you decide.

2) No, SAT exams are given only in high school, usually junior to senior year.

3) Pepperdine is a wonderful private school with a great location (Malibu!). Here are transfer statistics from Santa Monica college:

http://www.smc.edu/transfer/statistics/

131 students transfered to USC (University of Southern California) which is also a private school. A few transferred to Pepperdine and other similar private institutions.

4) No, community colleges are only two year colleges. Cal States are universities, which are 4-year, like the UC schools.

5) You usually stay in a junior college for 2 years and transfer to a 4 year...you would start Pepperdine as a junior and continue to your senior year with a diploma. Many of the credits will transfer, some will not. But no, you will graduate on time just like the other students who attended Pepperdine right after high school.

There shouldnt be a problem, but in order to make things easier for yourself, you should go to a community college that has an arrangement with a good university. For example, the University of Michigan (one of the best schools in the country) has an arrangement where it gives preference to the transfer students of Washtenaw Community College. I'm sure there are several schools in New York that behave in the same manner. Good Luck!

Transfering from a community collage?default myspace myspace.com

as long as you are going to an accredited community college you will have no problem transferring to a 4 year school.
If you finish your two years with your Associates degree. You should have no problem in the transfer.

The problem comes when students don't finish their degree, take just the classes that will transfer for their major and then want to move on.

My sister took her classes that were required for her major, but did not take her general education requirements. Tried to transfer to a 4-yr university and had a really hard time getting accepted.

She went back and took just general education and received her Associates, then every college was offering acceptance and scholarships to boot.

Good luck

Community Service that doesn't suck?

Recently I was sentenced to 500 hours of community service for turfing 16 lawns in my 1991 Buick Century. However, I've been kicked out of my original assignment at the old folks' home for mowing all the flowerbeds. I would like to know about forms of community service that don't require any real work, especially those which could be falsified. Also, if anyone else has fun stories about how to get kicked out of community service, I'd be willing to also take the half credit and try them out.

Why don't you go tell the judge that you would rather just spend the time in jail instead of community service.

Community Service that doesn't suck?celebrities myspace myspace.com

that's why its called community service..it requires real work that serves as a consequence for your actions...you just blew yourself the chance to have the easiest service in the old folks home...others would have to clean public toilets and pick up trash and clean up parks... a tip though...If they see you that you are really good with keeping up with your consequences, they always let you go even though your sentence is still unfinished....

my community service was to serve as a social worker in a remote place in the city..I have to endure the smell but its worth the help whjen you see the smile on those families...Im not really into those things but it was required to complete my highschool because I choose skip classes and play with my band instead inside the school campus...LOL

hope I helped though ^___^
Leaf Blowing doesn't suck. Complaining about helping people does.
You could always spend your time in jail instead. That would likely be doing those who have to find you a place to do community service that you can't screw up a favor.
Go to jail. Go directly to jail, do not pass go.

Somebody gave you community service, thinking that your crime was "soft" enough not to deserve time in jail. The community service sentence was to give you 500 hours to think about what you did, and to keep you from doing it again. Obviously, it didn't work.

You don't like your sentence? Talk to the judge or advocate and offer to spend the jail time. To receive 500 hours of community service, I'd say you'll do about 48 hours at the least.

Good luck to ya . . . . and hey . . . don't drop the soap.

I don't have a really help ful answer for you, but I'm working as a fundraiser for different charities. So, your problem touched me instantly. I would suggest you to approach any major sponsors you may know -could be company or organisation /like, amnesty international or something like that.

If there are other schools with similar problems, why don't you coordinate altogether any fundraising events? Students can create things that can be sold..!

Another idea is to find a block on the net and through that you can make the general public aware-create a 'donate' link so someone can offer money....!

When there's strong will and love for something, then changes can be achieved. I apologise for not being really help ful, but I all my positive energy and thought may be with you.

Fundraising is not easy but is all about good energy...good luck.
