Community Service鈥?

As an active participant in the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC), I am capable of acquiring a certain award if I complete 40 hours (or more) of community service.

For the past few weeks, I have been diligently working for a particular citizen within my community, who also happens to be a friend of the family. Currently, he is in the process of constructing an addition to his house, for the benefit of his family and father-in-law.

The work that I have completed is strictly voluntary. There is no pay involved. Therefore, my question is: does this qualify as community service?

Here is what the regulation states:

"Community Service Ribbon - Will be awarded to those NSCC/NLCC Cadets, Instructors, and Officers that distinguish themselves by accumulating 40 hours or more of community service work. This award is for true community work, i.e. serving meals for the homeless, community clean up, work at Veteran's Homes charity work, etc. Attendance at parades, or public events is not the purpose of this ribbon. Recording of service time will be on the Admin Remarks page (NSCADM 008). Approval authority is the unit CO."

You need to ask your Petty Officer to find out from the CO if he/she will approve the work you have done.
